Macular Hole

The macular is part of the retina or back of the eye. It has a high concentration of cone cells responsible for detailed vision such as reading, sewing, watching TV etc.

As the eye ages, the vitreous, responsible for maintaining the shape of the back of the eye, can become lose and shrink away from the retina. This is a normal part of aging, however in some people, it results in a small tear or hole in the macular.

Early signs of this happening might be increased flashes and / or floaters and distorted central vision. When it does develop it is usually only in one eye and the hole is usually very small.

The severity of the symptoms depends on the size of the hole.
