AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL

Advances in Artificial Lens Technology

There have been great advances in

artificial lens technology. Examples

of this include the AcrySof® ReSTOR®

lens and the AcrySof® IQ lens. Today,

the AcrySof® family of lenses are

among the most frequently implanted

lenses in the world. This is largely

due to the long-term clinical results

of the lens. Furthermore, these lenses

are made of a patented material

developed specifically for the eye.

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® Lens

Following cataract surgery with traditional artificial lenses, patients often still need to use their reading glasses or bifocals to be able to read objects at close range. This is because traditional artificial lenses implanted during cataract surgery typically only

correct for distance vision.

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens is a breakthrough lens that uses apodized diffractive technology (similar to technology used in telescopes and microscopes) to give patients a full range of vision - near through distance - and to reduce dependency on reading glasses or bifocals following cataract surgery. This means that many patients can read the text on items such as prescription bottles, magazines, and newspapers, while also providing the ability to see items at a distance free from glasses or bifocals.

In fact, clinical trials have demonstrated that four out of five patients never needed to wear reading glasses or bifocals after having cataract surgery with the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens in both eyes.

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens now also filters both UV and blue light.

How the AcrySof®ReSTOR® IOL Works

Apodized diffractive optics for a full range of vision

In the healthy eye, the lens flexes to focus on objects at varying distances. The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL was designed to provide a complete range of vision independent of the ciliary muscle body. To achieve this, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL combines the functions of both apodized diffractive and refractive regions.

Apodization for minimal visual disturbances

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL gives cataract patients a better chance of leaving glasses behind, because it is the only one with patented apodized diffractive technology. Apodization is the gradual reduction or blending of diffractive step heights. This unique technology optimally distributes the appropriate amount of light to near and distant focal points, regardless of the lighting situation.

The apodized diffractive optic of the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is designed to improve image quality while minimizing visual disturbances. The result is an increased range of quality vision that delivers a high level of spectacle freedom.

+4.0 D add power for quality near vision

To facilitate quality near vision, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL incorporates a +4.0 diopter correction at the lenticular plane. This correlates to approximately +3.2 D at the spectacle plane.

Apodized Diffractive

The apodized diffractive optics are found within the central 3.6 mm optic zone of the lens. This area comprises 12 concentric steps of gradually decreasing (1.3-0.2 microns) step heights that allocate energy based on lighting conditions and activity, creating a full range of quality vision – near to distant.Refractive

The refractive region of the optic surrounds the apodized diffractive region. This area directs light to a distance focal point for larger pupil diameter, and is dedicated to distance vision.

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL Optical System

Better vision quality throughout the range

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL features a unique optic system that merges the strengths of both apodized diffractive and refractive technologies for better vision quality throughout the full range of vision – without glasses.

Near and Distance Vision

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL uses the central apodized diffractive region and +4.0 D correction to focus a clear image on the retina for near vision, while the peripheral refractive region, also paired with the central apodized region, helps improve distance visual acuity. As a result, 84% of AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL patients vs. 23% of monofocal IOL patients have achieved a combined uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/25 or better with near visual acuity of 20/32 or better.

Also, clinical studies indicate that AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL patients have functional intermediate vision for daily tasks such as applying make-up, shaving, reading labels on a shelf and viewing a computer monitor. 85% of the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL patients achieved uncorrected intermediate vision of 20/40 at 60 cm (23.6 inches). With this range of vision, individuals can read the normal type in a newspaper, and are able to pass the vision test for a driver's license in most states.
